My Side Hustle
2D Design
I like starting with a shape and transforming it node by node, pretty old school but that is what was available to me when I started.
I design and make a range of A6 postcards for a variety of occasions inspired by the nature around us and our everyday consuming of technology and these are currently available to buy on my Etsy shop.
Have a look at jenfirthdesigns.co.uk for more detail around my stationery business.
2D Printing
Printing is one of my favourite forms of creativity, especially lino and screen printing.
I find the whole process, from creating the initial art work, through to getting my hands covered in ink, hence the thumb prints everywhere, enjoyable.
I love the uniqueness you get with each print.
Nature and natural forms, like waves are some of my favourite influences. I love the calmness of the sea, but equally love it even when it is at its most ferocious, and powerful.
I am also concerned about the plight of sea creatures and the effect that our behaviour is having on their habitat. Damage that is being caused by human actions.
2D Textiles
I also like working with fabric in 2D.
Predominately I am on a quest to make things that are both nice to look at, but that also have a use.
I like to experiment with different forms, different textiles, different techniques. I love knitting, though I am not that brilliant at it, I also love crocheting and sewing.
2D sloganising
My badges are designed as massive opinions in a miniature scale.
I make these at home with my badge machine and therefore can make designs as per requirements. When an idea pops into my head I can get on and make it.
3D Textiles
I like to work with fabric and yarn to make home decor, soft furnishings and personalised gifts.
This has included products such as personalised cushions, blankets, home decor for new arrivals and bunny making kits.
3D Paper Modelling
Recently, I have found a new passion, paper modelling, and making pop up cards, character based paper decals that I use in my short-form videos.
I find the use of paper is different from fabric, you need to be more ingenious about how you cut and fold paper into curves.
